Chlorophyll in my nails

I love the colour green. Infact, it happens to be my favourite colour. I think that happened because i fancied wearing green while playing hide and seek as a kid, convenient as it was for camouflage, to hide in the bushes, behind the plant fences, on the trees. Half my wardrobe consists of green clothes, much to my mother's disapproval, as a result of which shopping with her would mean buying non-green clothes. Sad for me, for i hardly ever shop without her. The only time i went diwali shopping with one of my friends, my mother(who was in kenya at that time) was smart enough to tell her that greens, blacks and off-whites are not allowed! And very annoyingly, my friend stuck to the code, and didn't allow me even to look at clothes having those colours as the main! And i ended up getting something in rust. RUST. Ok, it wasn't so bad actually!

Green can be such a radiant colour. When you're cooking something, and say you have a mix of tomatoes and capsicums or beans on the stove, you'll realise it looks very nice, in way that appeals not only to your eyes, but to your mouth too :) And then one suddenly thinks about all the colours that are so richly present in the things we take for granted, in the things we dont bother to take a second look at... The rich red of apples, the subtle yellow of the babycorn, the happy orange of the carrot, the dark purple of the betroot, the pink-purple-white blend of the turnip, the lush green of cabbage, the dark green of okra, the pleasant green of capsicum, the pastel green of lime, the shiny green of chillies, the dull green of beans, the wet green of coriander, the fresh green of spinach. The fresh green of spinach. Spinach. One green i like looking at. But when that green takes advantage of my liking for it, and abuses my taste buds, and forces its way through my oesophagus, it crosses a line so delicate, that it spoils the relation between us. To be more direct, i hate spinach. Keerai.

Need i mention the varieties? Molai keerai, murungu keerai, paalak, methi..blah. If there's anything besides the green that i like about keerai, its chopping it. The process is quite complicated, considering the leaves need to be painfully seperated from their dear stems they've always been attached to, and thought they'll be attached to forever. Once the plucking has been satisfactorily carried out, chopping round 1 begins. There's this krrr krrr krrr sound that arises from the movement of the knife, backward and forward on the leaves awaiting execution, that could easily pass for music, depending on what one defines music to be. To me, the sound of the knife on keerai comes second only to the sound of a knife on capsicums! Crazy as that might sound, it is true. Removing the mid-portion of a capsicum, containing the seeds, the portion that is not usually eaten by normal humans, gives a sound that my brother and i find absolutely appealing. If one has not ever heard it before, i suggest one does it asap. Coming back to the keerai, round 1 of chopping usually results in uneven bits of leaf, strewn around the place, making it seem more like a mess than ever. And so one steps into round 2 of the chopping, making the bits more even in size, making them smaller, re-cutting the tender stems which are allowed entry with the other leaves. Aah then one stares at the vessel...with the mass of green staring back, and maybe even yelling out "how dare you hurt me so!" depending on one's state of mind. That done, one gives the mass of green the holy bath, under tap water, in an attempt to keep away from their intimidating stares. The cooking of the mass of green can be elaborated in
a whole different post by itself, but i shall refrain.

So lets just say one keeps the vessel aside... and one realises one's hands have a green tinge. One's nails are definitely green too. What do they call it? Aah, chlorophyll. When i had first come across that word, early in school, maybe in my 4th std, i remember pronouncing it again and again, using not only my tongue and voice, but my whole mouth and jaw, and telling people around me that the reason plants are so green is because of CHLO-RO-PHYLL. And so one turns to the next task at hand...forcing the green out of one's nails. *sigh* And as one does that... flashes of an experiment carried out in the biology laboratory encroach upon the brain's territory. There it was, a whatmann no.1 filter paper, protruding from a test tube, holding on it, adsorbed pigments from a leaf that was crushed with the help of a mortar and pestle, the pigments loosened out by acetone and petroleum ether. The pigments occupied parts of a bell shaped design...colours green, yellow and a light orange forming curves. It was easily the most interesting experiment that year, and the most beautiful thing the bio lab had seen, other than the royal colour of copper sulphate blue. Another colour that remains one of my favourites. I think i'll stop here. Though considering the number of topics i've touched, i could go on forever, as one thing always leads to another, and one thought triggers another.

comments section - tell us your favourite sounds, and colours :D

Lastly, i'd like to say a little prayer for my uncle who passed away recently. May his soul rest in peace, and may he find more happiness than he ever had. God Bless.

Yours "krr krr krr" ly
Signing off....

aah...that was a loong post..considering it was intended to be only about keerai and the colour green. copper sulphate blue is one of my fav. colours too.
i love the colour blue..and then comes black.and as for sounds..it really depends. even the sound of chocolate melting in the stove can be very appealing if i haven't had chocolate for a loong time.the sound of the rain if it has rained after months..the "cling" sound of the oven when something delicious is cooking..the sound of the school bell on a very very boring day.the sound of the rustling of leaves on going out after dayss..the sound of water flowing, the sound of the pages of a book flying..the list goes on..there is beauty in every little sound..loud or soft..
but there is one sound i absolutely hate..the sound of the horn..argghh hate it especially when there is a traffic jam and the cars go "peemp peemp"..but even that...when heard after a really long time...can be welcoming..

that was one long and cool post {Read this comment only if u have time.it's pretty long too}...so u carried out Chromatography in ur bio-lab eh ? Lovely colours that wuld result in :)..I haven't exactly witnessed that process, but wuld love too..u a biotech student ??

hmm...as regards my fav colours and sounds....

umm I love any form of light blue...its so pleasing to look at that squashy, elastic supple white clouds drifting peacefully in the beautiful blue background. I love black and green too..Unlike you divs, I looooooooove Keerai. But removing the leaves out of the thin stem is an ordeal. I always try avoiding that task, but in vain :(..

And sounds...erm..loads
1. the tweet tweet of the birds in the early morning (IF i am awake at that hr :|)
2. the gurgle gurgle sound that a cute l'il newborn makes with saliva leaking out of its mouth...:P
3. the sound that is made by the waves when they lash onto the beach..
4. I love the sound that comes out of the flute and veena...BLISS !!
5. and then that sssssssshhhhh sound that comes when u pour hot chocolate syrup over chocolate icecream or any icecream for that matter..(yummmmmmmmm..love that taste too :P)
6. I like another sssssssssshhhhhhh sound..the one that comes, when u pour tap water over the used Dosa Tava..

As far as the "sounds-that-i-hate" list is concerned, I would like to join hands wid u ppl --> I Hate the honk honk sounds and that irritating dog's bark..I also hate it when somebody constantly makes that swish swish sound with the polythene covers..HEIGHTS

That was one long comment :|

And well, yes, i am a biotech student. I am aware u r too. We did chromatography in 12th std, and i loved it. Loadsa sounds u've listed there ;-) was nice to read. And well, any sound a baby makes is lovely...even if its a cry, its something thats awaited when its born...so that becomes music to the ears... i like the flute and the veena too. But the violin takes a priority over those 2 :D

:D and sounds.. i love the sound of the rain on asbestos roof sheets :) and the sound of my dad tuning his mridangam though its getting rarer bu the day :(

Div said...

shruti - brilliant! Black and off-white so rock! I wouldn mind it if my wardrobe was that way...considering the 2 colours are out of bounds for now, i don see that happening! And i din know your dad plays mridangam :) cool.

mom's keerai dal is not good and u definitely can taste the keerai..and i don't really know how she makes it..just put a little bit of oil and put keerai and the usual salt..anyway i was too busy sleeping to watch her cook :Danyway watching it being made will not make it any tastier and nor do i think u would want to know and try it out?

Div said...

suk - okkk the time i ate it, it was good. maybe she cut down on the keerai!lol.. and i definitely dont think watcing her make it wud improve on taste! And i definitely dont want to try it out ;-) am quite satisfied makin it the way paati talls me to! And not bothering one bit abt how it tastes...lol.

Anonymous said...

lol..cut down on the keerai?more like she added more of it..like she says."it's good and nutritious".aah why is itthat EVERYTHING good and nutritious-the ones with the most nutrient content almost always has to taste bad?

Div said...

suk -its one of those things in the world that never changes. Yucky tasting things are nutritious... *sigh* keerai, soya, pavaka, avocado, papaya, deepavali marundhu, plain milk, etc etc etc

Anonymous said...

"Yucky tasting things are nutritious..."

Precisement !! and "Delicious things are a strict NO NO" .... Chocolates, Chaat, Icecreams, Golagandas, yummy hotel food, appalams, chips,Iced teas ......
The list goes on and on and on...

Div said...

nithya - why are those things a strict no no? I still eat them to my stomach's satisfaction! and definitely my tongue's too! :D

Anonymous said...

avocado?plain milk isn't that bad..anyway yeah i guess that's true..unless they make hybrid carieties or genetically do something to make vegetables taste better..maybe it will happen in the near future?in about 20 or so years?and 20 years i'll be probably feeding my kids the same keerai telling them that it is nutritious and by then i probably would have gotten to like all the vegetables??ok i'll stop balbbering

Anonymous said...

They are a strict NO NO because they come under the category called JUNK FOOD, or so my mom sez. but who bothers :P

"I still eat them to my stomach's satisfaction! and definitely my tongue's too!"

Me too Me too Me too :P

Div said...

suk - i bet u're goin to be doing just that! And well, i dont think veggies'll be genetically modified to taste good to your tongue ;-) Actually, who knows. Biotech's progressing like nobody's business.

nithya - Junk, yes! and definitely yumm!

Anonymous said...

ahem..I am a biotech student. Yes. I will try my level best to introduce this genetically modified yummy vegetables...But then for the kind of biotechnologist that I would turn out to be...I hope this doesn't become some genetically mutated "yuckier" vegetable :O
